It’s unfortunate, but injuries are a fact of life for athletes of all skill levels. A slight mistake on the field, and the next thing you know the doctor is telling you to take it easy for a while. You’re lucky enough if you manage to avoid any permanent complications.
Injuries differ, from minor sprains to terrible fractures. One thing is always true — no one wants to sit on the bench for too long. You want to quickly get back in the game, but how?
There’s no good in being reckless; forcing yourself to play before you’re ready will just make things much worse. There are many safe things you can do to speed up your recovery, however. Here are some of them:
- Follow instructions – Your doctor will give you a list of do’s and don’ts for the next few weeks or months. No matter what, follow these to the best of your ability. Don’t skip medications, take rehab exercises seriously, and above all, avoid putting unnecessary pressure on the injured body part.
- Look at alternative treatments – There’s no harm in supplementing your recovery with additional treatment, as long as you notify your doctor first. - Keep eating – Many people lose their appetite while injured. It might be a side effect of the medication, or just plain depression at what happened. But your body needs calories and nutrients to rebuild itself, so pick up the fork and eat properly. Making sure that your diet has plenty of protein is also essential.
